Brixton Voices, Feb-Dec 2008

Brixton Inclusive was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to run a multi-media project called Brixton Voices. It ran from Feb –December 2008 and involved our young people exploring and creatively presenting the voices and histories of people living in Brixton over the last four centuries, through personal stories, images and archive resources. They met with many people – young and elders – from far and wide, gathering stories, memories and narratives which reflected what life was like in the past. Then they turned their research and discussions into a multi-media – physical theatre, sound, music and video – public performance which they put on at the Nettlefold Hall in West Norwood in December. We worked with project partners Living Lens, a participatory video company who facilitated some of the sessions and brought film and music to the project. The children and young people also learnt technical and creative video production skills and gained a practical understanding of how video, music and theatre can be used together to represent different times, generations, places and communities of people.

This project provided a platform for young people to delve deeply into the rich heritage of the community they live in. It also provided a platform for the voices of children and young people to be heard loudly and with passion.
